NBC's 'Rock Center' Survives Low Ratings

NBC is renewing the Brian Williams-anchored news magazine
Rock Center despite a dismal ratings performance in its freshman season. Not only is the show coming back, it is even getting a promotion of sorts. Currently on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m.,
Rock Center is moving to Thursdays at 10 p.m., a more important time slot because movie companies and auto dealers spend heavily on that night.

NFL Near Media Deals Worth $3.2 Billion

The National Football League is close to inking an eight-year extension of three media-rights deals that should earn it a total of about $3.2 billion a year from its broadcast partners, a 60% increase over its prior contract, according to people with knowledge of the talks.

On a night when nearly every show on broadcast was down from last week, likely due to Halloween, NBC's new newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams got off to a poor start. The new show averaged a 1.0 rating in the 10 p.m. timeslot last night in its premiere, below even what the drama The Playboy Club had been averaging in the timeslot before it was canceled. Rock drew 4.1 million viewers, which was better than Playboy's last two outings but still a very distant third in the timeslot. Link

Obama agreed late on Wednesday to move his jobs address to a joint session of Congress back by a night from Sept. 7 to Sept. 8 to avoid overlapping with a debate by Republican presidential candidates on the first night. The White House says Obama's address will be finished before the game begins at 8:30.

As one of Bob Greenblatt's closest friends, 20th Century Fox Television's EVP Jennifer Nicholson Salke had been rumored to be in line to join him at NBC since before he even officially started at the network. The deal between her and NBC is still far from being done, but it is expected to close. She would serve in an entertainment president capacity under entertainment chairman Greenblatt and may also have oversight of UMS.

NBC Retains Olympic Rights For 4 Games

NBC has won the U.S. rights to the Olympics through 2020 with a $4.4 billion bid. NBC, now controlled by Comcast, won the bid less than a month after the resignation of longtime sports and Olympics chief Dick Ebersol in a dispute with the new owners. The victory extends NBC's reign as the Olympic network in the United States, a period stretching back 20 years.

Fox Sports began the auction for Olympic television rights Monday in Lausanne, Switzerland, by offering to buy the next four Games starting with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. NBC has begun writing "upfront" business in earnest, the last of the big broadcast networks to get under way in this year's haggling, while Time Warner's Turner has begun feeling out the marketplace with an initial but aggressive bid for pricing. Talent had its best-ever premiere among total viewers and lead-out Voice hit a series high in viewers despite airing against tough competition from ABC's NBA finals. Judge's Ruling Could Save NFL Season

U.S. District Judge David Doty on Tuesday overturned an earlier ruling and said the league's TV contracts with CBS, NBC, ESPN, Fox and DirecTV — which allowed the NFL owners to still be paid a combined $4 billion in rights fees even if there were no NFL games next season — violated the NFL's collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association. That's a big win for the union and a blow to the league. But, winners and losers aside, the judge might have just equaled the playing field and hastened a settlement.

In a worst-case scenario, the entire 2011-12 campaign would be scuttled, resulting in losses of hundreds of millions of dollars in ad revenue and sending media buyers scrambling for replacements. Indeed, the NFL plays such a critical role in the TV market that even the loss of a handful of games could be catastrophic to the spring upfront.
