Sterling Davis of the Cox Media Group talks about what's on this year's tech to-do list at his 15 stations. In addition to upgrades and replacements, the big push will be consolidating the back-office business operations and the IT facilities as part of a multi-year project. Other priorities include rolling out the BXF interface between traffic and master control and extending mobile DTV capability to a few more stations.

He details the new technologies and features that are being included in new control rooms and studios -- LED lighting that reduces the costs of wiring, power and air conditioning; robotic camera systems; and automated control rooms. And looking to the future, many capabilities are being built in now that, while they may not be in use today, will allow for easy, inexpensive expansion or innovation in the future.

Bonten Media Group's WCYB (NBC) and Esteem Broadcasting's WEMT (Fox), which Bonten also operates, became the first stations in the Tri-Cities, Va.-Tenn., market (DMA 93) to broadcast local news in high definition at 5 p.m. on June 17.
