WCAU-WWSI Hosting Calls About Foster Care

WCAU and WWSI, the NBC and Telemundo stations in Philadelphia owned by NBC, are hosting a live phone bank today for families interested in providing foster care.

The two-and-a-half hour phone bank, starting at 4 this afternoon, will feature recruitment experts from Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services and its 25 provider agencies that will answer the phone lines to provide information in English and Spanish.

“With nearly 6,000 youth in Philadelphia living in foster care at any given time, NBC10 and Telemundo62 are committed to raising awareness about the need for families to provide loving homes for these children,” said Ric Harris, the stations’ general manager

“We are proud to partner with the Philadelphia Department of Human Services and to host a phone bank at our studios to increase the network of resource parents in the city.”

“Our children and youth need dedicated resource parents who can provide loving, stable homes,” said Cynthia F. Figueroa, DHS’ commissioner,

“There is no ‘one size fits all’ resource parent. The children and youth we serve are diverse, and we need resource parents that can provide welcoming homes to all children.”

WCAU-WWSI Holding Phone Bank On DACA

WCAU and WWSI, Philadelphia’s NBC O&O and Telemundo station respectively, and both owned by NBC, are holding a live phone bank this afternoon from 4 to 6 to answer questions viewers might have about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Experts from local organizations will provide free, confidential advice and counsel to callers.

Due to high viewer demand, this is the fourth community phone bank that WWSI hosts this year related to immigration issues. The previous phone bank in July 2017, which aired on Telemundo62 and focused on immigration, garnered more than 200 calls in only 90 minutes.

Participating organizations include CEIBA, Juntos, Nationality Services Center and the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia.

Experts will appear on-camera while they answer questions but conversations with callers will be kept private and confidential.

Local TV Steps Up To Help Harvey Victims

TV stations and their owners are at the forefront of helping raise funds for organizations aiding victims of the flooding due to Harvey.

In its first 24 hours, Texas Cares, an initiative started by Tegna, raised more than $1.15 million.
The Tegna Foundation matched the first $100,000 in donations. All money raised will be donated to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

“This is just the beginning. We will use this momentum to continue to serve our communities and help improve the lives of those in need,” said Dave Lougee, Tegna’s president.

All 46 Tegna stations in 38 markets are helping raise money and encourage donations for Texas Cares. Stations are running stories on-air and across social media, hosting telethons, telling stories of impact and informing viewers how they can help.

WPTV, the NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach owned by Scripps, raised more than $30,000 in just three hours during a phone bank manned by Red Cross volunteers.

Tomorrow in Philadelphia, WCAU and WWSI, Philadelphia’s NBC O&O and Telemundo outlet, respectively, both owned by Comcast NBCUniversal, will host a hurricane relief phone bank from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise funds for people impacted by  Harvey.

Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Eastern Pennsylvania will accept donations over the telephone to help support hurricane relief efforts.

In Hoosier country, WISH, Nexstar’s CW affiliate in Indianapolis, announced a 24-hour broadcast special, Hoosiers Helping Houston, all day today to benefit hurricane relief efforts in the Houston, Texas area.

“While the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey continue to grow, it’s important for us to extend our Hoosier Hospitality to those in need,” said Randy Ingram, WISH’s general manager.

“Our goal at WISH-TV is to make it as easy as possible for those wanting to help those affected in Texas.”

Today, WCVB, the Hearst-owned ABC affiliate in Boston, is teaming up with the Red Cross for
Relief Fund 5: Help for Houston, a telethon to benefit Harvey victims. WCVB’s live phone bank will be staffed by local Red Cross volunteers taking pledges from area viewers.

WCAU-WWSI’s Pet Project Exceeds 2016 Results

Almost 5,000 pets in the Philadelphia area now are out of shelters and into homes thanks to the NBC and Telemundo owned stations there, WCAU and WWSI, respectively.

Launched in July and culminating on Clear the Shelters day, Saturday, Aug. 19, the stations’ pet adoption initiative included the participation of nearly 50 animal shelters in the Greater Philadelphia region.

On Saturday, Aug. 19 alone, 1,450 adoptions took place, a 30% increase from 2016.

Nationally, the third annual Clear the Shelters campaign resulted in the adoption of more than 68,000 pets.

Since 2015, the NBC/Telemundo stations’ Clear the Shelters campaign has resulted in more than 141,000 pet adoptions.

“It feels great knowing that through the combined efforts of our partner shelters and rescue groups, volunteers, sponsors, and our viewers, we were able to exceed the number of pet adoptions from last year and helped nearly 5,000 animals find homes this summer,” said Ric Harris, WCAU’s general manager.

WWSI Hosting Immigration Phone Bank Tomorrow

One measure of a television station can be how it leverages its resources to help just one local viewer, or 100.

NBC-owned Telemundo’s WWSI Philadelphia is hosting a live, informational phone bank tomorrow afternoon from 5 to 6:30 to answer viewers’ questions about immigration-related topics.

This is the third time this year that Telemundo62 has hosted a local phone bank about immigration issues. In May, WWSI’s phone bank generated more than 100 calls.

The phone bank will feature 18 Spanish-speaking legal experts who will provide free, confidential advice and counsel to local callers.

Experts will appear on-camera while they answer questions, while conversations with callers will be kept private and confidential.
