WWJ Promos Descend Into March Madness

Every March, TV stations affiliated with the network showing the NCAA basketball playoffs and championship games — this year it’s CBS — have some fun with basketball-related news promos.

Earlier this week, Market Share showed one such promo from Sacramento, Calif. That prompted a note from Greg Shattuck, promotion manager at CBS O&O WWJ Detroit.

“This is a fun campaign we did with our CBS 62 First Forecast weather team, Karen Carter and April Moss, to take advantage and promote our March Madness programming,” said Shattuck.

Teen Suicide Prompts WBNS Bullying Special

WBNS, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, owned by the Dispatch Printing Company, is airing a one-hour special on bullying in partnership with The Columbus Metropolitan Club.

Hear Me Now: Bullying, Cyberbullying and Our Children airs tonight at 9 live on WBNS, 10TV.com and on the station’s Facebook page.

“The suicide of a 14-year-old boy in Columbus sparked an intense social media conversation that opened the floodgates,” says Kelly Frank, WBNS’ news director.

“Parents, teens, teachers and administrators want to stop cyberbullying, but are struggling to discuss it openly and honestly with each other. We call this disparity the Bullying Gap. We hope to break down communication barriers, quiet fears, bridge that gap and begin a conversation that will continue beyond our town hall.”

The special promises to be an evening of honest talk about what is really going on, focused on finding constructive solutions to end this growing problem.

Viewers will hear from parents, administrators, experts and teens who are stepping up and courageously taking on the tough topics of bullying, suicide and mental health.

WITI Tops Milwaukee By 2 Million On Facebook

Social Scorecard this week reveals how WITI Milwaukee leads its next nearest competitor on Facebook by more than 2 million social media actions.

WITI, Tribune’s Fox affiliate, is ahead in social media actions in the market over the last six months according to data from audience insight firm Shareablee.

WITI has more than 4.4 million actions on social, 37% of the total engagement generated by the DMA (No. 35), with more than 12 million social actions.

WTMJ, the market’s NBC affiliate owned by Scripps, led the market in actions per post with 129.

WXSS-FM, a top 40 contemporary hits station owned by Entercom, led on Instagram during the same period with almost 80,000 actions.

One reason WITI leads the market on Facebook by 2 million is a football team whose home is 120 miles outside the market, the Green Bay Packers.

“The Packers are big,” says Cary Docter, WITI’s digital content executive producer. “Anything Packers related gets a lot of engagement.”

In this tightly edited spot from Cox’s ABC affiliate WSOC, still black and white images are combined with color graphics over a rich soundtrack filled with sound bites and select audio clips from the station’s coverage to highlight WSOC’s investigative work in the 5 and 6 o’clock newscasts.

WCIU Reunites High School Basketball Rivalry

In the mid-1960s, two Chicago area high school basketball teams played each other to see which would be Illinois champs.

Marshall from Chicago’s West Side and New Trier from just up the road in Evanston.

Marshall’s teams then were a powerhouse, and won as expected in 1965.

In 1966, the two teams faced each other again in a rematch, and that game ended before the final horn after spectators brawled in the stands.

GameChangers reunites the players from both teams to watch rare game 8mm film clips from those games, played against the backdrop of racial tensions in the city and suburbs.

GameChangers airs on Weigel Broadcasting’s independent WCIU this Sunday night at 9.

Through the nonprofit GameChangers ’65-’66 Foundation, the Marshall and New Trier alumni are separately using private screenings and basketball to bring together present-day teams from the city and suburbs to connect the past with the present and further show how basketball can break down barriers and build bridges between different communities.

“This story is unique in many ways, as it is rare to bring two teams back together 50 years to the day after a contentious rivalry,” said Joe Dondanville, who is the writer, director and producer of GameChangers.

UPDATE: KOAA’s Town Hall On School Safety

A KOAA town hall meeting brought together members of the Colorado Springs community to brainstorm solutions to prevent school tragedies, an event that was the subject of Monday’s column on Market Share.

KOAA, the NBC affiliate in Colorado Springs owned Cordillera Communications, hosted the event on Monday night.

It was an opportunity for everyone in the community to hear how school threats are handled, addressing some of the parent concerns brought forward and how local school systems say they can move forward.

KOAA streamed the event on Facebook Live, where almost 10,000 watched the video.

Since the Florida shooting, Colorado Springs area police have spent almost 400 hours investigating school threats.

“I want you all to understand that every threat that comes in, in the smallest and slightest mention to the most serious is investigated at onset,” said Sgt. Lisa Cintron, the supervisor of CSPD School Resource Officers.

WJXT Hosts Live Discussion On School Safety

WJXT, Graham Media’s independent in Jacksonville, Fla., is airing a live town hall discussion to try to answer the question: How do we keep our kids safe?

Called Generation Under Fire, WJXT is partnering with the Public Policy Institute at Jacksonville University to air the special this Wednesday night at 8 from the campus at Jacksonville University.

“Perhaps it is because of the proximity to Jacksonville or the articulate way the students expressed themselves after the Parkland tragedy, or perhaps this is the tipping point of what has become an issue we can no longer ignore,” said Bob Ellis WJXT’s general manager.

“No matter your personal feelings, there is a common thread that we at New4JAX have determined is worth spending our airtime and efforts trying to solve, and that is keeping our families safe.”

Students, parents, educators and law enforcement will discuss ways in which dangerous situations are handled in local school districts, and how students — more outspoken and eager to participate than ever before — can get involved to help prevent a tragedy from happening in a Jacksonville area school.
