FCC Seeks Advice On Issuing Spectrum Licenses Without Auctions

The FCC has introduced a docket inviting input on how to release unassigned spectrum licenses from its inventory in light of the ongoing lapse of the commission’s auction authority. This development coincides with the one-year mark – on March 9, 2023 – of Congress neglecting to extend the FCC’s auction authority. As a result, the agency’s authority lapsed for the first time.

’20 Days In Mariupol’ Wins Best Documentary Oscar, A First For AP And PBS’s ‘Frontline’

Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days in Mariupol, a harrowing first-person account of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, won the best documentary Oscar on Sunday night. Statuettes were awarded to Chernov, producer and editor Michelle Mizner and producer Raney Aronson-Rath. The Oscar — and nomination — was a first for both Chernov, an AP video journalist, and the 178-year-old news organization. This was the third nomination and first win for Frontline. Tech Industry Sues To Block Ohio Social Media Law

The tech industry group NetChoice is suing to block an Ohio law that requires a wide swath of platforms — including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Threads, X and YouTube — to obtain parental consent before allowing access to minors under 16. In a federal complaint filed late last week in the Southern District of Ohio, NetChoice says the law violates the First Amendment for several reasons, including that it wrongly restricts minors’ rights to express themselves and access others’ speech, and only applies to certain social platforms.
