‘Saturday Night Live’ Mocks Final Debate

960Guest host Tom Hanks played debate moderator, Chris Wallace, to Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump and Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton in the opening sketch of this past weekend’s Saturday Night Live on NBC.

Although Baldwin’s Trump promised to tone himself down, he broke that promise almost immediately by screaming, “They’re ripping babies out of vaginas!” when asked about reproductive rights, according to a review by Time.

Hanks’ “humorously healing vibe continued to great effect in the return of ”Black Jeopardy,” with Hanks taking on the role of the one whitey destined to feel out of place in a game show written for and by black America,” said a review by the A.V. Club.

Lady Gaga was musical guest.

WAGA Ups Jeffrey Zellmer To Regional Creative Services VP

Jeffery Zellmer

Jeffrey Zellmer, creative services director at WAGA, the Fox O&O in Atlanta, has been promoted to regional VP creative services for WAGA and Fox Television Stations.

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this new role,” said Zellmer by phone yesterday.

In his new role, Zellmer continues to direct creative services for the station, but in addition will play a significant role in creative initiatives for the Fox Television Stations.

waga“I’ve got a great creative team here at WAGA in Atlanta,” said Zellmer, “so I should be able to expand my responsibilities.”

“Jeff has been an integral part of the success that WAGA has experienced over the past few years,” said Bill Schneider, WAGA’s general manager in making the announcement.

WAGA’s newscast at 10 p.m. is the No.1 late news program in Atlanta, according to Fox.

“For local stations to succeed right now takes more creativity than just great-looking promo spots,” said Zellmer.

He said he anticipates being involved in the Fox stations design and consistency of their branding messages to make sure they meet with the viewers’ needs.

Zellmer says he has already participated in a few group initiatives so the move seems like a natural progression.

Zellmer says the he’s been hearing from other Fox creative services directors all day offering their congratulations.

New PBS Drama Features Civil War Nurses

MercyStreetPosterwSawboneMercy Street, the first American drama to air on PBS in more than a decade, starts airing Sunday night at 10 ET.

The six-part series follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War — New England abolitionist Mary Phinney and Confederate supporter Emma Green.

The Green family’s luxury hotel in Alexandria, Va., just outside Washington, has been transformed into Mansion House, a Union Army hospital tending to the war’s wounded.

Inspired by memoirs and letters from real doctors and nurse volunteers at Mansion House Hospital, this new drama reveals the stories of those struggling to save lives while managing their own hardships.

Ridley Scott, whose film he directed, The Martian,  just won a Golden Globe award, is one of the executive producers.

KFOR Recognized With National Emmy

If you’re a television station in Florida or Louisiana, you’d want to be known for your hurricane coverage.

If you’re a television station in California, you’d want to be known for your coverage of earthquakes.

kforAnd if you’re a television station in Oklahoma, you’d want to be recognized by your peers for your tornado coverage.

Tribune’s NBC affiliate KFOR Oklahoma City has been honored with the national Emmy award for its spot news coverage of the Moore tornado in May of 2013. The award was given at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences National News & Documentary Emmy Award ceremony in New York Saturday night.

“The Moore tornado was devastating,” said Wes Milbourn, KFOR’s general manager.

Tornado Outbreak Slams Through Oklahoma“But we know that our severe weather coverage saved lives that day. Our team did everything possible to alert viewers to the danger.”

KFOR spent three days in continuous live coverage during and after the tornado.

“We were all deeply touched by what happened,” said Natalie Hughes, KFOR’s executive producer and acting news director.

“Our news and weather team worked tirelessly from tracking the tornado as it approached Moore through covering the stories of survivors, the post storm clean up and the rebuilding process.”

KFOR also won a national Emmy in 2006 for coverage of tornadoes in Oklahoma.

WJTV Enlists CBS News Scott Pelley For Local Promo

When you want to remind your viewers about the 90 minutes of news your station airs every evening, you’d like to have a spokesperson who is well-known, credible, distinguished, classy, with a national, even global, reputation for journalistic news excellence.

Someone like CBS News’ Scott Pelley.

Jackson-Mississippi-1_photoWJTV, is the Media General CBS affiliate in Jackson, the state capital of Mississippi.

The station airs 90 minutes of evening news from 5-6:30. WJTV’s local newscasts bookend the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.

So Brett Kenyon, WJTV’s brand manager, asked the CBS marketing team for help.

“We sent the script up the chain and CBS was very helpful in getting the lines recorded,” says Kenyon.

“We got goosebumps the first time we heard it, and if all goes according to plan, the viewers are having the same reaction.”

KBOI Inserts Itself Into CBS Promos

cbs newsWhen the major networks like ABC, NBC, Fox, and CBS, launch a national ad campaign for their network news or a primetime entertainment show like Thursday Night Football, they usually send their affiliates a version of the promo they can customize.

It’s the same promo except there are black holes in the spot where the affiliates can insert shots of their on-air talent or beauty shots of their market.

It’s totally arbitrary; affiliates can take advantage of it or not. But it’s a quick and easy way for the affiliates to tie into their network and give their talent and town some face time.

kbci_iconSuch was the case for KBOI, the CBS affiliate in Boise owned by Sinclair.

Joany D’Agostino, KBOI’s creative services director, sent me these two spots from CBS that her station customized.

The first one is the new graphically-driven, no-announcer, CBS News promo which is still airing. Can you pick out the shots from KBOI?

The second is for the launch of this season’s Thursday Night Football on CBS.

Joany and I both spent time in Colorado and Boise and she had this to say about the two places.

“Boise is pretty like Colorado Springs (mountains just a little smaller) and the people are great. The station is a good one, also.”

Expanded TV Documentary Tells Little Known Story

sam2America’s Untold Journey – 450 Years of the African-American Experience, is an hour-long documentary which reveals untold facts about the importance of African-American involvement in the nation’s creation.

Produced by Project 360 Media and SAM2, a division of Stephen Arnold Music, America’s Untold Journey was expanded to an hour long documentary following the overwhelmingly positive response to the half-hour show that debuted in 2015.

“It reveals a vital chapter of American history that was unknown to so many and struck a chord with viewers everywhere” says Gordon Smith, SAM2 co-founder.

“The newly expanded 60-minute format for 2016 is equally surprising, and even more uplifting.”

Last year, the half-hour version of America’s Untold Journey aired during Black History Month on more than a hundred local TV stations.

The documentary’s 2015 debut attracted large viewing audiences, as well as inspiring community events and education nationwide.

The new, expanded, hour-long version is available for local TV stations nationwide this coming February for Black History Month.

“The hour-long version reveals a lot more information,” says Smith.

“We added a new host, new graphics, new music, basically re-crafted the show.”

America’s Untold Journey chronicles the 450-year arc of continuous African American history beginning in 1565 in Spanish Florida and continuing to the present day.

Interviews with experts and vivid imagery combine to shed a fascinating new light on the role that they and their ancestors played in American history — and ultimately the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

John Heinen, former station marketing executive and founder of Project 360 Media, says his company develops compelling projects for the broadcast and cable marketplace.

WSOC Charlotte Shares Latest Promos

9-WSOCTV-WEBIn response to last week’s column showing new promos from markets large and small, I got a note from Robert Wendt, WSOC’s research director along with some promo examples. WSOC is the ABC affiliate in Charlotte owned by Cox.

“Thank you for sharing,” says Wendt.

“It is great to see what other stations are doing around the country. I notice a particular absence of digital, mobile and social value and context as it relates to the morning news. Clearly though, our business is filled with very talented and creative people. Awesome work to all.”

Former ABC, CBS Marketers Combine Creative Juices

Two former network news marketing executives from ABC and CBS News, once fierce competitors, are joining forces in a new company, Our Creative Juices.

Jeff Kreiner and Bruce Soloway have more than 32 years’ worth of combined experience marketing the top anchors and reporters in the country.

“You can’t put two people together in this business that have more experience than us,” says Jeff Kreiner, former SVP of Advertising and Promotion at CBS News.

Kreiner spent 14 years at CBS News and another 4 years at NBC News.

“We oversaw 10,000 promos a year,” says Kreiner.

Bruce Soloway spent 14 years in charge of Advertising and Promotion at ABC News back in the 80s and 90s.

Soloway founded SoloVision Productions in 1999 which has created hundreds of commercials for Scripps Networks, Food Network, HGTV, DIY and The Cooking & Travel Channels, to name a few.

Kreiner sees Our Creative Juices as a consultant and creative shop for station broadcast groups.

iQuanti Predicts Sunday’s Emmy Award Winners

Actor Andy Samberg is hosting.

I got an e-mail from the company, iQuanti, asking if I’d like to see a list of who they predict will win in some of the categories.

How did they come up with the winners?

new square logo“To identify the winners, iQuanti looked at the search frequency in Google and Bing for over 90 nominees in 16 different categories,” according to a rep for the company.

“The winners were selected by those nominees that were searched for the most. iQuanti collected the data through their proprietary predicative search tools.”
