WPIX Taps Carey As News Director
WPIX, Tribune Broadcasting's New York CW affiliate, today named Bill Carey its news director. He will assume his new duties on Nov. 30.
Carey has more than 20 years of management experience in television news. He joins WPIX after serving most recently as station manager and news director for WQAD Moline, Ill., an ABC affiliate owned by Local TV.
Prior to that, Carey founded Bill Carey Consulting in 2008 to work with cable, broadcast and Internet clients, including Cablevision in New York and New Jersey.
From 2004 to 2008, Carey was vice president-GM of WFTS Tampa, Fla. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Carey resigned his job at WFTS six months after he was arrested and accused of burglary and battery following a hit-and-run crash. Prosecutors, the paper reported, "decided not to file charges against Carey, after the victim in his case signed a waiver of prosecution and reached a civil settlement with him for an undisclosed sum."
Prior to his work at WFTS, Carey was the top news executive at WXYZ Detroit.
From 1994 to 1999, Carey was news director at WCBS (1996-99) and assistant news director (1994-96).
Before WCBS, Carey held a series of station management roles at WBBM Chicago and before that at WABC-TV New York, including senior producer, responsible for all news content at the station.
