By Staff
TVNewsCheck, Nov 6 2009, 11:04 AM ET

Local TV's ABC affiliate WNEP Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pa. (DMA 54) will be adding The A Team, Marcus Welby, M.D. and Magnum P.I. to its lineup. Those are just a few of the shows that will premier on the station's digital subchannel WNEP2 starting Monday, Nov. 9, when it becomes a Retro Television Network affiliate.

WNEP2 will continue to air two hours of live news every morning from 7 to 9 a.m., but after that, a full day of old favorites begins.

"Our sister station WNEP2 is evolving into a place for great alternative programming," said WNEP President-GM Chuck Morgan. "We're already producing two additional hours of live news from 7 to 9 weekdays. Now we're adding all the old favorites like Kojak and The Incredible Hulk that we think our viewers will really love to watch. We're committed to making this station a destination for local news specials, sporting events and other local programming. It's the beginning of an exciting new time."

Morgan said WNEP2 will retain the "squeeze back" box for programming, with live Stormtracker 16 Realtime Doppler Radar in the lower left of the screen. Public Service Bulletin Board messages, Happy Birthday 2 You greetings and weather forecast information show on the bottom right.

"We think it's the best of both worlds," said Morgan. "Our viewers really love being able to see the live radar whenever they want. Now, they'll also be able to watch some of their old favorites too."

I love Retro TV -- when I can get it. I'm jacross the river from Trenton, NJ and sometimes pick up WFMZ Allentown with an indoor antenna on my non-cabled upstairs set. Comcast doesn't retransmit Retro. If I could get an all-news network on an OTA digi and Retro, I could easily live without cable. Retro -- get on a Philly channel or maybe even WZBN Trenton's digi. And Comcast... you are missing a bet by not putting these digis on your service... just another incentive in a bad economy to churn. With all the channel space now, why wouldn't you offer Retro as opposed to some of the other less desirable channels such as "Speed" and "Daystar"... And Retro -- put on more classic sitcoms like Dobie Gillis and series like Twilight Zone...
