Weather Channel To Air Movies For First Time

Associated Press, Oct 20 2009, 3:25 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — The Weather Channel plans to show movies for the first time in its 27-year history.

First up? "The Perfect Storm."

Story continues after the ad

The network has slipped longer programming into its constantly rotating forecasts in recent years. But over a four-week period starting the night before Halloween, the cable network will try Friday night movies.

Its managers figured the George Clooney movie about a horrific storm off the New England coast would be a good first choice - particularly since it's airing on the 18th anniversary of the actual event.

And this Friday be sure and tune in when CNN brings you the News Channel's premier of "Patton."

I have a question...............................Uh, What?

If they really want to bring in the ratings... how about a show with a dysfunctional family that chases storms. Of course, there wouldn't be a need to focus in on the kids or the weather... just the battles between the parents. It worked for TLC!!!

Double what? The last few times I checked the Weather Channel before a trip for the weather I never did see it due to all the "programs". Yes I have a computer and can check on-line but a lot of people do not.

Insane! That's the problem with TWC, now that it's of drinking age, it doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up. Stick to weather, and kick Al Roker back to the Today Show.

The Weather Channel has become less and less revelant to me in the past few years. I used to enjoy watching it, but now all I ever see are long form programs.
Same thing with Headline News...now it's all talk and opinion shows.
TV Land...reality shows
SoapNet...airing old movies.

I want my cable networks to fulfill the needs they once did, Now, they are all scooping up the same programming vomit and pretending they are serving their viewers better. No thanks...I'm not watching anymore.

Remember when MTV used to play music videos? Face it, it won't be long before TWC transforms into a movie channel. In my book it's already obsolete.

Movies...you've got to be kidding me! I don't turn to ESPN for cooking why would I want to turn to the Weather Channel for movies. Who's making the decisions over there.

Just another network NBC is destroying. This makes as much sense as movies on TV Land. Let's hope if Comcast enters the NBC-world we can put a stop to the madness. Let niche channels KEEP THEIR NICHE! Not every channel needs to look like USA Network.
