NBC Affils Defend Comcast-NBC Merger
The NBC affiliate association rose to the defense of the Comcast-NBC merger in FCC comments, rebutting charges of some critics that the deal would result in the migration of major sports from NBC to Comcast cable networks and would weaken local broadcast news and public affairs.
The affiliates' defense is premised, however, on the FCC imposing condition on its approval of the mergers -- conditions agreed upon by the affiliates and Comcast.
The conditions would prohibit Comcast from moving major sports events to cable networks, linking network-affiliate contracts with retransmission consent negotiations and undermining the network-affiliate partnership by delivering programming directly to cable and satellite systems.
"So long as the FCC's approval of the transaction is subject to these three requested conditions..., the association is optimistic that the transaction will preserve a strong network/affiliate partnership and enhance the public benefits produced by free, over-the-air television," the affiliates say.
Ever since the merger was announced last December, Comcast executives have repeatedly vowed to strengthen NBC, the affiliates say.
"Not only will a strengthened network provide local affiliates with high quality national programming to distribute on a free, over-the-air basis and with enhanced possibilities for innovation, but a strong network partner facilitates the ability of local affiliates to invest in high quality programming that meets the needs of their local communities."
