SPJ Lifetime Award For KWTV's Gary England
Gary England, director of meteorology at Griffin Communication's CBS affiliate KWTV Oklahoma City (DMA 45), has been selected as a recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to honor and recognize journalists for their life's body of distinguished achievements and service to the field of journalism.
England is a meteorologist, author and television personality. He graduated with a bachelor of science in mathematics and meteorology in 1965, and was one of the first graduates of OU's School of Meteorology. He is the author of four books, including Those Terrible Twisters (1987) and Weathering the Storm (1996).
In addition, he has appeared in numerous national and international television programs and is the recipient of many awards, including two Emmys from the Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
According to KWTV, in 1981 England became the first person to use Doppler radar for direct warnings to the public. Besides appearing in the Steven Spielberg movie, Twister, he is a consultant for weather specials produced by international channels.
England is also a popular public speaker and in 2006 was a keynote speaker for the dedication of the new National Weather Center in Norman, Okla.
In 2009 England, his weather team and KWTV were awarded an Edward R. Murrow Award for best in the nation in the category of breaking news/weather in competition among all large television markets.
