Obama Taps Phil Verveer For Job At State
President Obama said Tuesday that he intends to nominate veteran communications and antitrust lawyer Philip Verveer to a top State Department communications policy post with the rank of ambassador.
Once nominated and confirmed, Verveer would serve as deputy assistant secretary of state for international communications and information policy in the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. He would also be the U.S. coordinator for international communications and information policy.
During a 35-year career, Verveer worked at the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission and the FCC before settling into private practice.
Between 1973 and 1977 he was the first lead counsel in the DOJ's antitrust suit against AT&T, which eventually led to its breakup.
At the FCC, he was chief of the Cable Television Bureau, the Broadcast Bureau and the Common Carrier Bureau.
He is currently of counsel to the Washington law firm of Jenner & Block LLP.
