WVIR CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, LAUNCHES HD NEWS
Waterman Broadcasting NBC affiliate WVIR Charlottesville, Va. (DMA 181), debuted high-def newscasts with its 6 p.m. broadcast on April 19.
This is the Charlottesville station’s first live, locally-produced, HD broadcast, the result, it said, of more than five years of planning and construction and an expenditure of more than $3 million.
In announcing NBC29 News in HD, General Manager Harold Wright said, “All of us at WVIR-TV are proud to be the first station in Central Virginia and the Central Shenandoah Valley to broadcast local news in high definition. We also believe WVIR-TV is the first station in the state to convert its entire broadcast plant to a state-of-the-art digital operation in anticipation of the end of analog broadcasting.”
WVIR employs more than 100 people who produce more than 30 hours of local news each week. For national news the station is an affiliate of both the NBC and CNN television networks. In addition to its main newsroom in Charlottesville, the station operates news bureaus in Waynesboro, Va., and at the state capitol in Richmond.
WVIR serves 11 counties in Central Virginia and the Central Shenandoah Valley.
